SQP Monthly Rainfall Report- August 2011
Date: 01 Sep 2011Conditions for August across the country were generally very good for most of the regions with many hitting their monthly rainfall average. The only notable exception is southern Victoria and given some recent water logging issues it perhaps came at a good time. Even the drier sections of Northern NSW/southern Queensland managed to record average rainfall thanks to some good falls late in the month. NSW and northern Victoria have received timely rainfall of late after experiencing quite a dry period prior to August while WA has also extended their good period with average rainfall for the month. Despite the good recent rainfall, reports out of WA are still suggesting a significant lack of subsoil moisture heading into the crucial spring period and although the BOM is suggesting a 55-65% chance of above average rainfall for spring it is still something that needs to be monitored. There are still a lot of regions who are only sitting on 60-80% of average rainfall for the April-August period, however these areas are coming off the back of an extremely wet summer and are therefore generally in sound shape. The BOM’s spring outlook for other areas suggests only a 40-45% chance of above average rainfall for SA, Vic and parts of southern NSW, while the north and central regions of the state and into Qld have approximately a 55% chance. All indicators are still currently suggesting neutral conditions for the remainder of the year, although there are indications of conditions leaning towards a La Nina pattern with the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) remaining positive and further cooling of the central Pacific Ocean – patterns generally associated with a La Nina event.

SQP Weekly Rainfall Report 22nd of August 2011
Date: 22 Aug 2011Some good rain right across the country this past week, particularly through NSW where the southern and central areas averaged above 25mm’s. After a dry few months this is the good soaking that everyone has been looking for particularly with spring approaching and the weather beginning to warm up. The August average rainfall has now generally been reached in NSW while the drier regions of northern Victoria also recorded some decent totals. SA and WA had another solid week of rainfall while Queensland was the one region that missed out although the Darling Downs did average 5mm’s. The forecast for this week is reasonably clear with a front hitting the southern areas of WA today before fizzing out over the bight, while heavy rain is predicted off the Queensland coast which may bring a little moisture to the mainland later in the week as well as to northern NSW.

SQP's Weekly Rainfall Report 15th August 2011
Date: 15 Aug 2011There was some form of moisture across most cropping districts in the past week with plenty also on the radar for the remainder of this week. WA received around 8-15mm’s and further moisture is expected today. The rest of the states generally received between 4-12mm’s and it was good to see the Central West area of NSW average some of the highest around the nation. Northern Victoria also fared well with the Mallee recording approximately 10mm’s while it was the opposite in the south of the state where the Western District, which has had some water logging issues, averaged around 4mm’s. The fine weather over the SE of the country will disappear with a large front pushing across the bight hitting SA today and will move through Victoria and southern NSW in the coming days. It is expected to bring widespread welcome rain to a lot of NSW as well. While it is expected to fine up across the east and SA approaching the weekend another front at this stage is forecast to reach WA’s coast by Saturday.

SQP's Weekly Rainfall Report 8th August 2011
Date: 09 Aug 2011There was some much needed moisture through northern Victoria and southern NSW in the past few days in what was a good start to the month. The Murray and Murrumbidgee regions as well as the Victorian Mallee and Goulburn regions in particular benefitted from the rain, while the Central West region of NSW also received 5-10mm’s. Further showers are expected through many of these areas in the coming days before clearing later in the week. WA continues to see good rain as well with all regions receiving over 10mm’s and above 20mm’s in the Esperance region. A rain band is moving across the state today which will clear for the remainder of the week before another decent front will hit on the weekend. SA have also had good rain, with some large totals through the south of the state in particular while Queensland have again seen minimal rainfall.

Weekly Rainfall Report 12th of July 2011
Date: 12 Jul 2011The main beneficiaries of the rain this past week was again SA and WA and southern/central areas of Victoria. Unfortunately once again it was NSW and the Mallee region of Victoria who didn’t see as much, although the average of around 5mm’s was still welcome. Most regions of SA are well on their way to receiving average rainfall for June, while it is a similar story for the Geraldton region of WA and parts of Victoria. The areas of concern are parts of NSW such as the Central West and SE and the Great Southern regions of WA, although the forecast looks quite favorable there. Rain is forecast for WA early this week while another front is expected to push through the region on the weekend. Rain that is pushing down through central Australia will reach northern SA and parts of the EP by mid-week but looks to dissipate from there. There is also some activity forecast for QLD and northern NSW, however for Victoria and southern/central NSW it remains clear through to the weekend.

Weekly Rainfall Report 7th of July 2011
Date: 04 Jul 2011There was some really good rain across WA and SA in particular this past week, with the Central region of WA averaging around 40mm’s and the drier Midlands area 25mm’s. In the past few days SA have seen the majority of the falls, with all regions getting a decent soaking. Most areas across Victoria and southern NSW also recorded something, generally around the 10mm mark, and there looks to be more on the way in the middle of this week. In contrast the north of the country saw very minimal rainfall and the radar is again providing a similar forecast. A front will bring moisture to the majority of the SE corner of the country on Wednesday with patchy showers lingering for the remainder of the week, while WA will remain clear through to the weekend.
